In their survey, the authors discuss the recent progress in the geometric mapping theory of composition operators on Sobolev spaces, mainly based on their own contributions. The geometric mapping theory of composition operators on Sobolev spaces goes back to the Reshetnyak problem (1968) on geometric characterizations of isomorphisms \(\varphi^*\) of semi-normed Sobolev spaces \(L^1_n (\Omega)\) and \(L^1_n (\widetilde{\Omega})\) generated by the composition rule \(\varphi^* (f) = f \circ \varphi\). Here \(\Omega\) and \(\widetilde{\Omega}\) are domains in the \(n\)-dimensional Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^n\), \(n \ge 2\). After a solution was found by \textit{S.~K. Vodop'yanov} and \textit{V.~M. Gol'dshtejn} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 16, 224--246 (1975; Zbl 0309.46029)] the interest turned to the more general problem of mappings \(\varphi^* \in \mathcal{L}(L^1_p (\tilde{\Omega}),L^1_q (\Omega)) \), \(1 \le q \le p \le \infty\). With respect to this generalized problem, in the main two Sections~\(3\) and~\(4\) of the survey, the authors focus on the following topics:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[3.] Composition operators on Sobolev spaces\N\item[3.1.] Capacitory properties of composition operators\N\item[3.2.] The analytical description of composition operators\N\item [3.3.] Mappings of bounded $(p, q)$-distortion\N\item [4.] On the weak inverse mapping theorem for Sobolev homeomorphisms\N\item[4.1.] The weak regularity of Sobolev homeomorphisms\N\item[4.2] Remarks on the weak regularity and the Luzin $N$-property\N\end{itemize}
