A polynomial \(f(x, y)\in \mathbb C[x, y]\) is called quasihomogeneous if there exist integers \(w, \alpha, \beta\) with \(\alpha , \beta \) not both zero such that every nonzero monomial \(c_{ij}x^iy^j \) of \(f\) satisfies the equality \(w=\alpha i+\beta j. \) Let the polynomial \(f(x, y) \) be written in the form \(f(x, y)=f_0+\ldots +f_ny^n, f_i\in \mathbb C[x], f_n\not =0.\) The discriminant of \(f\) with respect to \(y\) is the polynomial Disc\(_y(f)\in \mathbb C[x]\) such that for every \(a\in \mathbb C\) \N\[\N\mathrm{Disc}_y(f)(a)=f_n^{2n-2}(a)\prod _{i<j} (b_i-b_j)^2, \N\]\Nwhere the \(b_i \) are the roots of \(f(a, y).\) The authors prove that a reduced (i.e., without multiple irreducible factors) polynomial \(f\) with nonzero \(f_0, f_n\) and nonzero weight in \(x\) is quasihomogeneous if and only if \(f_0, f_n, \mathrm{Disc}_y(f)\) are nonzero monomials (in \(x\)). An equivalent geometric reformulation is also given, in terms of Zariski closure in \(\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1 \) of the variety defined by \(f.\)
