The authors give an order theoretic characterization of contractive elements in an abstract operator system \(V\) that can be represented as projections on a Hilbert space leading to the notion of an abstract projection. It is shown that an element is an abstract projection if and only if it is a projection in the injective envelope of \(V\). As an application the authors derive an abstract description of the set of commuting quantum correlations which may turn out to be valuable for certain aspects of quantum information theory, specifically Tsirelson's problem which is known to be equivalent to several outstanding conjectures in the field of operator algebras such as Kirchberg's QWEP-conjecture or Connes's embedding conjecture.
