The paper under review goes on the author's long-term program of simplifying parts of the classification of finite simple groups using the framework of saturated fusion systems. The focus lies on the structures of centralizers of involutions in saturated fusion systems over finite \(2\)-groups.\N\NThe main objects of study are components, in the sense of fusion systems, that arise intrinsically within the centralizer of an involution. More precisely, let \(\mathcal{F}\) be a saturated fusion system on a finite \(2\)-group \(S\) and let \(z \in S\) be an involution. Then the centralizer fusion system \(C_{\mathcal{F}}(z)\) may contain a subnormal quasisimple subsystem normalized by \(C_S(z)\), which is called an intrinsic component. The goal is to characterize such components and identify conditions under which they necessarily appear.\N\NThe author proves several results on the structure of normal and quasisimple subsystems in saturated fusion systems and shows that under suitable hypotheses, in particular \(\mathcal{F}\) being of component type and \(C_{\mathcal{F}}(z)\) being constrained, such intrinsic components exist and are determined up to isomorphism. These results provide fusion-theoretic analogues of classical theorems on components in involution centralizers and refine the author's earlier work on the component and standard form theories for fusion systems.
