First, the concept of semismoothness is given and trust region-type methods for solving semismooth equations are discussed. This paper deals with a trust region-type method based on the recently developed smoothing technique. The proposed method is actually a combination of a trust region method with a line search method based on backtracking. Conditions under which the proposed method converges globally and superlinearly are given. Moreover, it is shown that proposed method actually reduces to a smoothing Newton method with unit steplength after finitely many iterations.
