This very useful and important paper develops a common framework for the comparison of the proposed control strategies with the use of linear fractional transformations. The author specifies a general cost function, which is applicable for the active control of a vibratory system, and obtains the optimal control solutions for the proposed control methodologies. The feedback strategies are implemented with controllers having access to full or partial (velocities) states of a dynamic system. The main result consists in developing a method for the computation of power and energy requirements of actuators and introducing a new approach in comparing the effectiveness of various control strategies. Moreover, power and energy requirements of actuators are related to the Bode sensitivity integral. The author presents an example for which the corresponding tradeoff curves of actuator effort and energy versus the general cost function (the integral of the system's energy) were generated.
