There are two approaches to estimating the convergence rate in the Birkhoff ergodic theorem; see the discussion in [\textit{A. G. Kachurovskii} and the author, Math. Notes 106, No. 1, 52--62 (2019; Zbl 1427.37004); translation from Mat. Zametki 106, No. 1, 40--52 (2019)]. The first one arises from the large deviations point of view, see [\textit{A. G. Kachurovskii} and the author, Math. Notes 94, No. 4, 524--531 (2013; Zbl 1370.37012); translation from Mat. Zametki 94, No. 4, 569--577 (2013)]. The second one, focused on pointwise estimates, is considered in the present paper. In particular, the author studies maximum possible rates, lower bounds for supremums, asymptotics on subsequences, as well as the existence of optimal and near optimal estimates. More detailed surveys of the current state of research for estimates of the rates of convergence in the Birkhoff ergodic theorem (for both approaches, with applications) can be found in [\textit{A. G. Kachurovskii} and the author, Trans. Mosc. Math. Soc. 2016, 1--53 (2016; Zbl 1370.37014); translation from Tr. Mosk. Mat. O.-va 77, No. 1, 1--66 (2016)] and [the author, Sib. Math. J. 65, No. 5, 1170--1186 (2024; Zbl 1557.37001); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 65, No. 5, 991--1010 (2024)].\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1548.37016].
