Let \(1\to K\to G\to F\) be a short exact sequence of groups describing a split extension of \(G\), with \(K\) being finitely presented and \(F\) being a finitely generated free group. The authors obtain an isoperimetric inequality for \(K\) in terms of a ``combined area/radius'' function for \(G\). The methods used include adjustments of diagrammatic methods which were introduced by the first author in his paper [in Geom. Funct. Anal. 6, No. 2, 301-345 (1996; Zbl 0868.20033)]. The main application of the general result is the following Theorem: Under the above hypotheses, one has the following two conclusions: (1) If \(G\) is hyperbolic, then \(K\) satisfies a polynomial isoperimetric inequality. (2) If \(G\) is (either synchronously or asynchronously) automatic, then \(K\) satisfies an exponential isoperimetric inequality. Conclusion (1) answers an open question which was raised by \textit{N. Brady} [in J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 60, No. 2, 461-480 (1999; Zbl 0940.20048)]. It also improves the result of the paper of Gersten cited above. The authors note also that conclusion (2) is best possible in this generality, due to an example of Baumslag, Bridson, Miller and Short, which is discussed in the same paper of Gersten.
