The paper is concerned with an initial boundary value problem for a linear parabolic equation on a bounded convex domain in two space dimension. The given domain is decomposed into subdomains. Assuming that each subdomain is covered by well structured finite element meshes, e.g. uniform or quasiuniform, a linear/bilinear finite element space is defined. The meshes cannot match at common interfaces between subdomains. To handle this problem a finite element method with Lagrange multipliers is used. Semidiscrete and discrete schemes are considered. Application of an interpolation finite element postprocessing technique is proposed in order to improve the accuracy of the numerical solution. For details on domain decomposition and on postprocessing technique previous publications of the authors are referred. Based on results from these publications some properties of the considered schemes are established and error estimates are obtained.
