The author studies the Cauchy problem for the compressible Euler equations in one space dimension with the pressure a smooth, positive, stricly increasing convex function of the density such that \(p(\rho) = A \rho^\gamma(1+ P_1(\varepsilon \rho^{\gamma-1}))\) as \(\rho \to 0^+\). Here, \(P_1(X)\) is a convergent power series of the form \(\sum_{k\geq 1}c_k X^k\), \(\epsilon\) and \(A\) are positive constants, \(\gamma = 1+ \frac{2}{2N+1}\). Under the assumption that the initial density and the initial velocity are bounded (or small enough) and the parameter \(\varepsilon\) is small enough (less than one, respectively), the existence of a global weak solution is proved. The proof is based on the method of DiPerna. The approximative solutions are constructed by solutions to the Riemann problem and it is shown that the Young measure corresponding to the limit of the approximative solutions is the Dirac measure. The main novelty with respect to the work of DiPerna is considering the term \(P_1(\cdot)\) in the pressure.
