The authors prove the long standing conjecture that a Stein manifold \(\Omega\) of complex dimension \(n \ge 1\) has a negative constant holomorphic sectional curvature if and only if it is biholomorphic to the unit ball in \(\mathbb C^n\) with possibly a closed pluripolar set removed. They also assume that the corresponding Bergman space \(A^2(\Omega )\) is base point free, separates points and separates holomorphic directions. For this purpose they use deep results by Bochner and Calabi concerning manifolds with constant holomorphic sectional curvature. In addition, they also study the zero-curvature case and show that if the Bergman metric of \(\Omega\) has zero constant holomorphic sectional curvature, then \(\Omega \) is biholomorphic to a domain \(D\) in \(\mathbb C^n\) whose Bergman space \(A^2(D)\) has an orthonormal basis for the form \(\{ \frac{z^\alpha}{\sqrt \alpha !} \, \phi_1 \}_{\alpha \in (\mathbb N_0)^n} ,\) where \(\phi_1 \in A^2(D)\) with \(\phi_1 \neq 0\) and \(\| \phi_1 \| =1.\) In the appendix, John Treuer proves that there does not exist a domain \(D \subset \mathbb C^n\) such that its Bergman space has an orthonormal basis of this form. Bases of this form are typical for weighted spaces of entire functions, so-called Segal Bargmann spaces, which have different functional analysis properties.
