Let \(\sigma\) be an orthogonal representation of a group \(G\) on a real Hilbert space. It is shown that \(\sigma\) is irreducible if and only if its commutant is isomorphic to \(\mathbb{R}\), \(\mathbb{C}\), or \(\mathbb{H}\). The result was known in the finite-dimensional case.
