In this paper, affirmative answers for the following questions are given:\N\N(1) How is it to be decided whether a system is Hamiltonian, given its equations of motion?\N\N(2) Is there a recipe for the construction of the pair \((H,\omega)\) for such a given system?\N\N(3) When the association to \((H,\omega)\) is non-unique, what is the relation between the different sets? In particular, does there exist canonical representatives?\N\NIn addition, some examples are discussed. Finally, the construction of a Lagrangian from the equations of motion is presented.
