The author studies the relation between uniformly convex operators introduced by \textit{B. Beauzamy} [Stud. Math. 57, 103--139 (1976; Zbl 0372.46016)] and operators of martingale type. For identity operators of Banach spaces this connection has been analyzed by \textit{G. Pisier} [Isr. J. Math. 20, 326--350 (1975; Zbl 0344.46030)] who showed that a Banach space admits a uniformly convex norm iff it has martingale type \(p\) for some \(p>1\) iff it is superreflexive. The author shows that a similar equivalence fails for general linear bounded operators between Banach spaces. He then introduces the new notion of martingale subtype and proves that, for any linear bounded operator \(T\) from a Banach space \(X\) to another Banach space, it is equivalent to \(T\) being super weakly compact and to the existence of an equivalent norm on \(X\) such that \(T\) becomes uniformly convex with respect to this norm.
