The classical notion of exponent was generalized from finite groups to arbitrary finite dimensional complex Hopf algebras by \textit{P. Etingof} and \textit{S. Gelaki} [Math. Res. Lett. 6, No. 2, 131-140 (1999; Zbl 0954.16028)], motivated by previous work of \textit{Y. Kashina} in the semisimple case [Commun. Algebra 27, No. 3, 1261-1273 (1999; Zbl 0923.16032)]. In their paper, the authors gave several equivalent definitions of the exponent of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra \(H\), one of them being the order of the Drinfeld element of the double \(D(H)\) of \(H\). But the exponent of a non-semisimple Hopf algebra is usually infinite. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new invariant of finite dimensional Hopf algebras: the quasi-exponent. It is introduced as the order of unipotency of the Drinfeld element of the double and is then always finite. Several properties of the quasi-exponent are established: it coincides with the exponent in the semisimple case, it is invariant under twisting and passing to the double, and it coincides with the exponent of the group of group-like elements in the pointed case. Finally, the authors discuss the quasi-exponent of the finite dimensional quotients of quantized enveloping algebras at a root of 1, usually called Frobenius-Lusztig kernels.
