Let \(K(X)\) be the algebraic intersection strength of a Riemannian surface \(X\), defined by\N\[\NK(X):=\sup_{\alpha,\beta}\dfrac{|\text{Int}(\alpha,\beta)|}{\ell_X(\alpha)\ell_X(\beta)},\N\]\Nwhere \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) range over all oriented simple closed geodesics with respect to \(X\), Int\((\cdot,\cdot)\) denotes the algebraic intersection, and \(\ell_X(\cdot)\) denotes the length of geodesics with respect to \(X\).\N\NIn the paper under review, the authors show that \(K(X)\) attains its minimum in the moduli space \(\mathcal{M}_g\) for \(g\ge 2\). For the proof the authors use the strip deformations, introduced by W. P. Thurston.\N\NAlso, the authors study the asymptotic behavior of \(K(X)\) in \(\mathcal{M}_g\) \((g\ge 2)\) and show that as the homologically systolic length \(\text{sys}_h(X)\) approaches 0,\N\[\NK(X)\sim \max_{\gamma}\frac{1}{\ell_X(\gamma)\ell_X(\alpha_{\gamma})},\N\]\Nwhere \(\gamma\) ranges over all nonseparating simple closed geodesics of length at most 1, and \(\alpha_{\gamma}\) denotes one of the shortest nonseparating simple closed geodesics that intersect \(\gamma\) exactly once.\N\NFinally, the authors demonstrate through examples that the asymptotic behavior of \(K(X)\) cannot be described by a single function of \(\text{sys}_h(X)\), and that considering only homological systoles and curves that intersecting them is also insufficient.
