In the paper under review, the author considers the adjoint representation of the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{so}(p,q)\) in the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}_{p+q}(\mathbb R)\). The main result is Theorem 1.1 stating that for \(p+q \geq 3, p,q \geq 1\), there are two irreducible \(\mathfrak{so}(p,q)\)-representations in \(\mathfrak{sl}_{p+q}(\mathbb R)\). From this he deduces the well-known result that the connected component \(\mathrm{SO}(p,q)^\circ\) of identity is the maximal connected subgroups of \(\mathrm{SL}_{p+q}(\mathbb R)\), for \(p+q /\geq 3, p,q \geq 1\).
