Let \(A\) denote an abelian variety of dimension \(\geq 2\). The Kummer variety associated to \(A\) is by definition the quotient of \(K= A/(-1)_A\). If \(L\) is a symmetric line bundle on \(A\) defining a principal polarization, its square \(L^2\) descends to a line bundle \(N\) on \(K\). It is a classical result that the sections of \(N\) induce an embedding of \(K\) into projective space. The present paper gives a generalization of this result. Consider the abelian variety \(X\subset A^r\) defined as \(X= \{(a_1,\dots, a_r)\in A^r\mid a_1+\cdots+ a_r= 0\}\). The symmetric group \({\mathcal S}_r\) acts on \(X\) and the quotient \(K_r= X/{\mathcal S}_r\) is called the generalized Kummer variety of order \(r\) associated to \(A\). Let \(M\) denote the restriction of \(p^*_1 L\otimes\cdots\otimes p^*_rL\) to \(X\). Then \(M\) descends to a line bundle \(N\) on \(K_r\). The main result of the paper is that all the sections of \(M\) are \({\mathcal S}_r\)-invariant and induce an embedding \(\varphi_M\) of \(K_r\) into projective space. The idea for the proof is to use a modification of the map \(\varphi_M\) which in the case of the classical Kummer variety goes back to Wirtinger.
