The authors discuss various aspects of the global regularity of the \(\overline\partial\)--Neumann problem. The main theorem states that for a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb C^n\) the following four conditions are equivalent: (i) \(\Omega\) admits a family of essentially pluriharmonic defining functions, (ii) \(\Omega\) admits a family of conjugate normals which are approximately holomorphic in weakly pseudoconvex directions, (iii) \(\Omega\) admits a transversal family of vector fields which commute approximately with \(\overline\partial\), (iv) there exists a pure imaginary non-vanishing smooth one-form \(\eta\) on \(\partial\Omega\) that is zero on the complex tangent space and its conjugate such that if \(T\) is the purely imaginary tangent vector field to \(\partial\Omega\) that is orthogonal to the complex tangent space and its conjugate, satisfies \(\eta(T)\equiv 1\), and \(\alpha:=-\mathcal L_T\eta=\) the Lie derivative of \(\eta\) in the direction of \(T\), then \(\alpha\) is approximately exact on the null space of the Levi form.
