This paper presents a theoretical model for analysing the first- and second-order statistical properties of reflected ultrasonic speckles. The authors study distributions of amplitude and phase of ultrasonic speckles in a scattering space. They are taken in the form of Rayleigh and uniform distribution, respectively. The average transverse size of speckles within the scattering domain is found to be dependent on the characteristics of the measuring system only, and does not vary with the position in the domain. A comparision between numerical and experimental results demonstrates that the developed theoretical model and three related assumptions are suitable for analysing statistical properties of ultrasonic speckles reflected from a rough interface.
