This is a tutorial paper about the categorical notion of monad. The main aim of the paper is to take some examples and look in detail at the kinds of theories that are monadic over categories other than \({\mathcal S}\)\textit{et}. The categorie considered here are \({\mathcal P}\)\textit{oset}, \({\mathcal G}\)\textit{raph}, \({\mathcal C}\)\textit{at} and \({\mathcal S}\)\textit{ubset}-\({\mathcal C}\)\textit{at}.
