The author investigates the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions to the equation \[ -(r(t)u')'+p(t)u=0, \quad t\in(a,b), \] where \(r\) is positive and continouus on \((a,b)\subset \mathbb R\) with the possibility \(b=\infty\), and \(p\) is locally integrable on \((a,b)\) and is not of constant sign. In particular, the author gives some oscillation criterion for the solutions. In former papers [\textit{M. Cecchi, M. Marini} and \textit{G. Villari}, J. Differ. Equations 82, 15--27 (1989; Zbl 0694.34035) and ibid. 90, 381--397 (1992; Zbl 0761.34009), and \textit{M. Marini} and \textit{P. Zezza}, ibid. 28, 1--17 (1978; Zbl 0371.34032)], the special cases \(p(t)>0\), \(t\in (a,b)\) or \(p(t)<0\), \(t\in (a,b)\), were discussed.
