Generalized (special) functions with bounded deformation (G(S)BD) were introduced in [\textit{G. Dal Maso}, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 15, No. 5, 1943--1997 (2013; Zbl 1271.49029)] in order to study the minimization of the functional\N\[\N\int_{\Omega\setminus K} \mathbb{C} e (u): e (u) \, \mathrm{d}x + \gamma \mathcal{H}^{d-1}(K),\N\]\Nwhere \(d\) is the space dimension, \(u\in GBD(\Omega)\) with symmetric gradient \(e(u)\), and \(K\) is a nonsmoothness (fracture) set for \(u\). The purpose of this paper is giving an alternative proof of the compactness criterion in GBD that appeared in [\textit{A. Chambolle} and \textit{V. Crismale}, Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci. (5) 24, No. 3, 1575--1610 (2023; Zbl 1534.74006)]. The compactess result essentially says that a sequence in GBD with bounded energy converges to a GBD function, up to taking a subsequence and subtracting suitable piecewise rigid motions (plus a lower semicontinuity property related with the \(d-1\)-measure of jump sets). The proof presented here relies on a suitable version of a Poincaré-Korn inequality and on a multiscale construction, that can be useful also in other frameworks.
