The Epstein zeta-function is a special case of an Eisenstein series for the general linear group. If one is given a positive definite quadratic form \(Q(x)\) of degree \(2K\), then the corresponding Epstein zeta-function is the sum of \(Q(x)^{-s}\) over non-zero \(x\) in the integer lattice of the Euclidean \(2K\)-space, assuming that \(\Re s > K\). In the present work the author considers the Epstein zeta-function \(F_d(s,K)\), which corresponds to the choice \(Q = (m_1^2 + \cdots + m_K)^2 + d(m_{K+1}^2 + \cdots + m_{2K}^2)\), where the \(m\)'s are integers and \(d>0\) is a given number. In his previous work [Comment. Math. Univ. St. Pauli 47, 155-236 (2002; Zbl 0931.11010)] the author showed that \(F_d(s,K)\) can be continued analytically to the whole complex plane with a simple pole at \(s = K\). It satisfies the functional equation \[ \left({\pi\over\sqrt{d}}\right)^{-s}\Gamma(s)F_d(s,K) = \left({\pi\over\sqrt{d}}\right)^{-(K-s)}\Gamma(K-s)F_d(K-s,K), \] so that \(s = K/2\) may be thought of as the ``critical point''. The purpose of the paper (this is his Main Theorem) is to prove that for all pairs \((K,d)\) of integers \(K\geq 1\) and \(d>0\), we have \[ F_d\bigl(\tfrac K2,K\bigr) \not= 0, \] except for exactly eight pairs, which have been calculated explicitly in the paper. The calculations pertaining to the proof of the Main Theorem and the related discussion are carried out in detail.
