The paper studies time periodic solutions of the dissipative wave equation \[ u_{tt}-c^2u_{xx}+\mu u_t+u^3=f(t,x)\tag{1} \] for \(t,x\in \mathbb R\) and with the periodic boundary value conditions \(u(t,x)=u(t,x+L)\) for all \(t,x\in \mathbb R\). Here \(c\) and \(\mu \) are positive constants and \(f(t,x)\) is a given time \(T\)-periodic forcing. The first results of the paper shows the existence of a \(T\)-periodic solution of the wave equation (1) for any \(f\). Then a criterion is found for the existence of a period-doubling bifurcation in (1). A computer assisted proof is used in a concrete form of (1) in order to check this criterion for getting the period doubling bifurcation in such a wave equation.
