A functional series \(\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}f_k(x)\) (\(f_k\) is integrable) is said to be universal in \(L^1\) with respect to rearrangements if for every integrable function \(f\), the terms of this series can be rearranged so that the series obtained in this way converges to \(f\) in the metric of \(L^1\). On the other hand, the series above is said to be universal in \(L^1\) with respect to subseries if for every integrable function \(f\) one can select a subseries \(\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}f_{m_k}(x)\) that converges to \(f\) in the metric of \(L^1\). In this paper the authors prove the following theorem. Theorem. There exists a series of the form \[ \sum_{k=1}^{\infty}c_{n_k}\varphi_{n_k}(x), \] where \(\{\varphi_{n_k}(x)\}\) is a subsystem of either the trigonometric or the Walsh system such that \[ \Biggl|\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}c_{n_k}\varphi_{n_k}(x)\Biggr|\leq \lambda_m , \quad m=1,2,\dots,\quad x\in [0,1], \] where \(\lambda_n\uparrow\) as \(n\to\infty\), and for each \(\varepsilon>0\) a weight function \(\mu(x)\) can be constructed such that \(0<\mu(x)\leq 1\), \[ |\{x\in [0,1] : \mu(x)\not = 1\}|<\varepsilon, \] and the series above is universal in the space \(L^1_{\mu}\) with respect to rearrangement and subseries.
