This paper concerns the self-similar solutions of the form \(u(x, t)= t^{\alpha} f(|x|t^{-\beta})\) of the generalized KPZ equation: \[ u_t= \Delta(u^m)- |\nabla u|^p\quad\text{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^n\times (0,+\infty), \] where \(1\leq m< p< 2\), \(\alpha= {2-p\over p(3-m)-2}\), \(\beta= {p-m\over p(3-m)-2}\), and \(f= f(r)\) satisfies \[ (f^m)''+ {n-1\over r} (f^m)'+\beta rf'+\alpha f- |f'|^p= 0\quad\text{for }r> 0. \] A function \(u\) is said to be a very singular solution if \(u\) is a nonnegative solution which is continuous in \(\mathbb{R}^n\times [0,+\infty)\setminus\{(0, 0)\}\) and satisfies the following: \[ \lim_{t\searrow 0}\, \sup_{|x|>\varepsilon}\, u(x,t)= 0\text{ and }\lim_{t\searrow 0}\, \int_{|x|\leq\varepsilon} u(x,t)\,dx= \infty\quad\text{for each }\varepsilon> 0. \] Note that the first equality is equivalent to \(\lim_{r\to\infty}\, r^{\alpha/\beta} f(r)= 0\). Furthermore, if \(n\beta< \alpha\) and \(f\) satisfies this, then \(u\) is a very singular self-similar solution. For \(m= 1\), the authors show the existence and uniqueness of a very singular self-similar solution of the form \(u= t^{-\alpha} f(|x|t^{-\beta})\). For \(m> 1\), they show the existence of a very singular self-similar solution and prove that for such a solution the function \(f\) must have compact support.
