A star product on a Poisson manifold \(M\) is called tangential if it restricts nicely to the symplectic leaves of \(M\). Tangential star products are governed by the tangential Poisson cohomology first introduced by A. Lichnerowicz. The author recalls some known results on tangential Poisson cohomology and shows that for a regular Poisson manifold, the tangential Poisson cohomology coincides with the leafwise de Rham (or Čech) cohomology of the associated symplectic foliation. Computing the spaces of such a cohomology leads to open and nontrivial problems. To get a better understanding of these difficulties the author studies explicitely many examples coming from nilpotent and \(3\)-dimensional Lie algebras and compares the tangential Poisson cohomology and the usual Poisson cohomology.
