The author defines real and \(p\)-adic topological Lie algebra functors on the category of topological Hausdorff groups. These functors extend the usual Lie algebra functors for real or \(p\)-adic Lie groups of finite dimension. Throughout the paper, approximations of topological groups by projective limits of Lie groups are used. Following ideas developed by \textit{R. Lashof} [Pac. J. Math. 7, 1145--1162 (1957; Zbl 0081.02204)], one considers the set \(\text{Hom}(\mathbb R,G)\) of continuous group homomorphisms from the additive group of the reals to~\(G\) (``one-parameter subgroups''). Using continuous homomorphisms from \(G\) into real Lie groups, one equips \(\text{Hom}(\mathbb R,G)\) with the structure of a real topological Lie algebra. This works for more general groups than those accessible by Lashof's approach. For a totally disconnected group~\(G\), the set \(\text{Hom}(\mathbb R,G)\) does not carry much information. The author introduces several \(p\)-adic Lie algebra functors, with the property that passage to an open subgroup does not affect the associated Lie algebra. The setting allows to introduce ``\(p\)-adic components'' of topological groups. The behaviour of the real and the \(p\)-adic Lie algebra functors with respect to products, quotients, and embeddings is studied. The \(p\)-adic functors cannot be very nice in that respect, because problems already arise for the case of \(p\)-adic Lie groups. By quite natural constructions, the author obtains 15 real topological Lie algebra functors, and 9 \(p\)-adic ones. Exhibiting special examples, it is shown that these functors are pairwise distinct (not naturally isomorphic), although each of them extends one of the usual functors from Lie theory. Finally, the author constructs real topological Lie algebra functors that assign the correct Lie algebra to each Banach Lie group.
