The author provides a very clear asymptotic discussion of averaging a stationary Stokes flow past periodically placed obstacles within a finite thin strip. Periodic homogenization arguments area combined with matched asymptotics expansions to estimate the size and structure of the boundary layers and to point out the wanted effective quantities. Numerical simulations nicely illustrate the quality of the homogenized model for a selection of boundary conditions at the inlet, and respectively, at the outlet of the strip (each choice corresponds to a slightly different boundary layer). The paper is written very methodologically.
