Let \(G\) be a connected, simply connected, quasisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>0\). Let \(V\) be a \(G\)-module with \(\dim V\leq p\), so that \(V\) is semi-simple by a result of Jantzen. The main result says that \(H^2(G,V)\neq 0\) if and only if \(V\) has a composition factor isomorphic with a \(d\)-fold Frobenius twist \({\mathfrak g}^{[d]}\) of the adjoint representation for some \(d\geq 1\). As auxiliary results the author proves: Suppose \(p\geq h\) and \(W\) is a \(G\)-module for which \(H^1(G,W)=H^2(G,W)=0\). Then \(H^2(G,W^{[d]})\cong\Hom_G({\mathfrak g},W)\) for all \(d\geq 1\). Next assume \(p>h\). Then in fact \(\dim H^2(G,{\mathfrak g}^{[d]})=1\) for all \(d\geq1 \). For any \(p\), there is a \(d_0\geq 1\), so that \(H^2(G,{\mathfrak g}^{[d]})\neq 0\) for all \(d\geq d_0\).
