The objective is to establish the existence of particular quasi-periodic and of `recurrent' solutions of first-order ODEs containing several periodic functions with incommensurable frequencies. In the argumentation, the ODEs are associated with particular PDEs, some characteristics of the latter being described by the former (those on tori). The quasi-periodic solutions sought are more restricted than those studied by, say, Bohr, Besicovich, Malkin and Moser. The term `recurrent' differs from the definition given by Birkhoff (no definite repetition pattern). It is not stated how the indirect approach via a PDE prevents or overcomes the problem of small denominators. -- No reason is given for the omission of almost-periodic solutions, which are more complicated than the quasi-periodic, and much less complicated than (Birkhoff's) recurrent ones. All three represent steps in dynamic complexity in its transition to (the deterministically defined) ``chaos''.
