This paper is devoted to the properties of \(w\)-hyponormal operators. It has been known that, for a \(w\)-hyponormal operator such that (a) if \(\text{Ker\,}T\subseteq \text{Ker\,}T^*\) or \(\text{Ker\,}T\supseteq \text{Ker\,}T^*\) and \(\widetilde T\) is normal \((\widetilde T:=| T|^{1/2}\cup| T|^{1/2})\), then \(T=\widetilde T\), that is \(T\) is also normal; (b) if \(T\) is invertible, then \(T^2\) is also \(w\)-hyponormal; (c) for a \(w\)-hyponormal operator \(T\), it is not known whether the kernel condition \(\text{Ker\,}T\subseteq \text{Ker\,}T^*\) holds in general. Here the authors show that (a) holds without the kernel condition \(\text{Ker\,}T\subseteq \text{Ker\,}T^*\); (b) holds without the invertibility if \(\text{Ker\,}T= \{0\}\), and there exists a \(w\)-hyponormal operator \(T\) such that \(\text{Ker\,}T\not\subseteq \text{Ker\,}T^*\) and \(\text{Ker\,}T\not\supseteq \text{Ker\,}T^*\).
