The method of scaling algebras introduced for analysis of the short-range behavior of quantum field theories is generalized to the case of fields carrying superselection charges, either strictly localizable (``DHR-type'' superselection charges) or those which can only be localized in the regions extending to spacelike infinity (``BF-type'' superselection charges). The criterion that specifies the meaning of that a charge superselection sector of the given quantum field theory is ``preserved'' in the scaling limit is proposed. It is shown that a superselection charge is preserved in the scaling limit if the corresponding conjugate charge is preserved as well. If particularly the DHR-type charges are preserved, the sets of local and global intertwiners for the superselection charges coincide.
