Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with identity and \(M\) an \(R\)-module. Let \(N\) be a submodule of \(M\). We say that \(N\) is a \(z\)-submodule of \(M\) if for any \(x\in M\) and \(y\in N\) such that every maximal submodule of \(M\) containing \(y\) also contains \(x\), then \(x\in N\) as well. This is a generalization of the notion of the \(z\)-ideals in commutative rings. In this paper, the authors study the properties of such submodules and investigate this notion in various constructions of modules. Also they look at some connections between \(z-\)submodules of \(M\) and \(z\)-ideals of \(R\).
