The authors give conditions for persistence and global attractivity of the difference equation \[ x_{n+1}=f(x_n,\dots,x_{n-k}),\;n=0,1,\dots, \] where the function \(f\) is continuous positive and decreasing in every argument. The results are applied to the difference equation \[ y_{n+1}= \frac{A}{y_n^p} + \frac{1}{y_{n-k}^q},\;n=0,1,\dots, \] where \(A,p,q \in (0,\infty)\) and \(k \in \{2,3,\dots\}\).
