Israel's classical result for the equations of motion of spherically symmetric shells of pressureless matter, so-called dust is obtained from a variational principle. Two variants of the principle are given, one adapted to a stationary observer in the interior of the shell, one adapted to an asymptotic observer. The idea is to use this variational principle for quantization.
