The authors analyze numerically the implicit boundary integral method (IBIM). This method can be employed to construct quadrature rules on regular lattices for integrals over irregular domain boundaries. The approximation of the numerical quadrature of IBIM is studied under different assumptions on the shape and regularity of a \(d\)-dimensional boundary. A systematic error analysis of IBIM is performed on uniform Cartesian grids for boundaries with different degrees of regularity. For a smooth, strongly convex boundary, it is shown that the quadrature error gains an additional order of \((d-1)/2\). Then, error estimates are derived for general boundaries under certain circumstances, including how quadrature error depends on the boundary's local geometry relative to the underlying grid. For a general smooth convex 2-D boundary with finitely many points of vanishing curvatures, the average quadrature error is shown to have an additional order of 1/2 under random rigid transformations. Besides, bounds on the variance of the quadrature error under random shifts and rotations of the lattices are derived. Extensions to open curves (instead of closed 2-D boundaries) are also discussed.
