Let \(\mathbb{G}\) be a discrete quantum group. The reviewed paper concerns states on \(C^*(\mathbb{G})\), the universal \(C^*\)-algebra of \(\mathbb{G}\) (equivalently viewed as the universal `algebra of functions' on the dual compact quantum group). The main theorem shows that a state on \(C^*(\mathbb{G})\) is a trace if and only if it is invariant under the natural \(\mathbb{G}\)-action. This was known earlier only in the special case of unimodular \(\mathbb{G}\). The result has several interesting consequences, such as the fact that amenability of \(\mathbb{G}\) is equivalent to the reduced \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_r(\mathbb{G})\) being nuclear and admitting a tracial state.\N\NThe proof of the main theorem combines neatly the (quantum) Furstenberg boundary techniques of [\textit{M.~Kalantar} et al., Anal. PDE 15, No.~3, 795--842 (2022; Zbl 1501.46058)], the theory of idempotent states on compact quantum groups and the concept of the maximal Kac quotient.
