    The paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem \[ u_t = \Delta u + u^p \quad \text{for } x \in \mathbb R^N, \; t>0, \qquad u(x,0) = u_0(x) \quad \text{for } x \in \mathbb R^N, \] where \(u_0\) is a nonnegative continuous function on \(\mathbb R^N\) that decays to zero as \(| x| \to \infty\) and \(p>1\). The main result of the paper gives the estimate of the solution \(u(x,t)\) for large \(t\). The paper is related to the earlier papers [\textit{C. Gui, W.-M. Ni} and \textit{X. Wang}, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 45, 1153--1181 (1992; Zbl 0811.35048) and J. Differ. Equations 169, 588--613 (2001; Zbl 0974.35056)].
