The authors observe that the concepts of spectrum compressing and invertibility preserving of unital linear mappings between complex unital algebras are equivalent and go on to use the work of Aupetit to connect them to the property of preserving idempotents. As a consequence, they are able to show that, for a \(\text{W}^*\)-algebra (resp., \(\text{JBW}^*\)-algebra) \(A\) and a semisimple complex Banach (resp., Jordan-Banach) algebra \(B\), a unital linear invertibility preserving map \(\phi\) from \(A\) onto \(B\) is a Jordan homomorphism. They go on to show that a surjective linear map \(\phi: A\to B\) between two unital semi-simple complex Banach algebras is a homomorphism if and only if \(\phi\) is unital and completely (or 2-) invertibility preserving.
