The book is divided into two parts: the first one (chapters 2--6) provides the mathematical background and focuses on the simulation of mechanical systems with dry friction. The second part is devoted to fundamental matrix, bifurcation of equilibria and periodic solutions in non-smooth continuous systems. The auxiliary first part (Ch. 1--6) contains non-smooth analysis foundations, differential inclusion theory, dry friction models and the detailed description of mechanical systems with set-valued force-laws (mechanical multibody systems with unilateral contact and friction modelled with set-valued force-laws). In Ch.~6 numerical integration methods for integration of differential inclusions with sliding modes are presented. Ch.~7 of the main part II contains the notion of fundamental matrix and Floquet theory for Filippov systems. Ch.~8 is devoted to bifurcation of equilibria in non-smooth systems, where the basic ideas of a discontinuous bifurcation are presented. Here the authors prove bifurcation theorems for planar piecewise-linear systems with a single switching boundary, and investigate the general case of non-smooth continuous systems with more than one switching boundary. The complications of bifurcations in non-smooth systems are demonstrated on various examples, and the presentation is restricted to one-parameter bifurcations. Ch.~9 studies bifurcations of periodic solutions in discontinuous systems of Filippov type. The introduction of Poincaré map (sec.~9.1) allows to convert the continuous-time systems to a discrete map. The authors explain how a discontinuous bifurcation of a periodic solution can be created when a periodic solution touches a non-smooth switching boundary. Here they discuss the relation with discontinuous bifurcations of equilibria and bifurcations of fixed points in planar maps. The fundamental questions concerning intersection of switching boundaries are studied, and various numerical examples of discontinuous bifurcations are presented. This chapter is the most contemporary and interesting for applications of the monograph results.
