Two tree-width-like graph invariants are defined, the first one in terms of positive-definite matrices and the second one in terms of a certain connected subgraph property. The behaviour and relationship of these invariants under certain transformations are studied. A minimal forbidden minor characterization of graphs with bounded first invariant is given.
