Suppose that \(f\in L^p([-1,1])\), \(1<p<\infty\), changes sign exactly \(l\) times in \((-1,1)\). The authors show that then, for \(n=1,2,\dots\), there exists a rational function \(r=P/Q\), where \(\text{deg}\,P=l\) and \(\text{deg}\,Q=n\), and a constant \(C=C(p,l,b)\) such that \[ \| f-r\| _{L^p}\leq C\omega(f,n^{-1})_{L^p}, \] with \(b=\min\{b_{j+1}-b_j:\;j=1,\dots,l-1\}\), where \(-1<b_1<\dots<b_l<1\) are the points at which a Steklov function \(f_h\) of \(f\) (for sufficiently small \(h>0\)) changes sign.
