Let \((G,K)\) be a Hermitian symmetric pair, and let \(\mathfrak g\supset\mathfrak k\) denote the corresponding complexified Lie algebra. Then \(\mathfrak k = \mathbb C H\oplus [\mathfrak k,\mathfrak k]\), where \(\text{ad}\,H\) has the eigenvalues \(-1,0,1\) on \(\mathfrak g\). Let \(\mathfrak g = \mathfrak p^-\oplus\mathfrak k\oplus\mathfrak p^+\) be the corresponding eigenspace decomposition. The main result of the paper is a description of all \(K\)-invariant ideals \(I\) of the symmetric algebra \(S(\mathfrak p^-)\) giving also the decomposition of \(I\) into \(K\)-irreducible components. The results resemble the Pieri rule for Young diagrams. As an application, the authors prove a branching formula giving the \(\mathfrak k\)-decomposition of the irreducible \(\mathfrak g\)-module with highest weight \(m\omega\), where \(m\in\mathbb N\) and \(\omega\) is the unique fundamental weight of \(\mathfrak g\) orthogonal to the compact roots.
