Let \(A\) be a finite-dimensional, power-associative algebra over either the real or complex numbers, and let \(S\) be a subset of \(A\) closed under scalar multiplication. The authors call a real-valued function \(f\) on \(S\) a subnorm if \(f(a)> 0\) for all nonzero \(a\in S\), and \(f(\alpha a)= |\alpha|f(a)\) for all \(a\in S\) and scalars \(\alpha\). If \(S\) is also closed under raising to powers, the norm \(f\) is called stable if there exists a constant \(\sigma> 0\) such that \(f(a^m)\leq \sigma f(a)^m\) for all \(a\in S\) and integers \(m\geq 1\). In this paper the authors review and extend several results from their earlier article [Linear Algebra Appl. 307, No. 1-3, 89--101 (2000; Zbl 0997.15021)], and one joint with \textit{R. Guralnick} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 51, No. 2, 209--219 (2002; Zbl 1046.15029)]. These results mostly deal with continuous subnorms on closed sets.
