Let \(k\) be a global field and \(G\) a connected reductive algebraic group over \(k\). For a parabolic subgroup \(P\) of \(G\) and a maximal compact subgroup \(K\) of the adéle group \(G(\mathbb A)\), consider an Iwasawa decomposition \(G(\mathbb A)=P(\mathbb A)\cdot K\). If \(\omega_K\) denotes the normalized invariant measure on \(K\), and \(\omega^P_{\mathbb A}\) the Tamagawa measure on \(P\), then \(\omega^P_{\mathbb A}\cdot \omega_K\) is an invariant measure on \(G(\mathbb A)\). So there is a unique constant \(C_{G,P,K}\) such that \(C_{G,P,K}\cdot\omega^P_{\mathbb A}\cdot\omega_K\) is the Tamagawa measure on \(G(\mathbb A)\). An explicit formula for \(C_{G,P,K}\) is known for \(k\)-quasisplit groups, and for an orthogonal or unitary group \(G\). For an algebraic group \(G\) determined by \(G(k)=A^\times\), the unit group of a simple \(k\)-algebra \(A\), the authors give an explicit expression for \(C_{G,P,K}\) in terms of special values of the zeta function \(Z_D\) of the skew-field part \(D\) of \(A\). As a consequence, they obtain an explicit lower bound for the Hermite-Rankin constant \(\gamma_{n,m}(D)\). Furthermore, their formula for \(C_{G,P,K}\) yields an asymptotic expression for the distribution of the \(k\)-rational points on the Brauer-Severi variety.
