The authors prove a superlinear rate of convergence of the conjugate gradient method for preconditioned normal operator equations in a Hilbert space. The same convergence result is verified for elliptic convection-diffusion equations in the Sobolev space \(H^1_0(\Omega)\) using different preconditioning operators. Superlinear convergence estimates involve the eigenvalues of the corresponding operators and the authors also illustrate how explicit expressions can be obtained for the arising constants. The mesh independence of the superlinear convergence estimates for suitable finite element discretizations of the convection-diffusion problems is directly derived.
