Optimization is a basic tool in applied mathematics. The monograph is devoted to the study of continuous optimization problems on complete metric spaces and Banach spaces. A particular feature of the book is that it does not use compactness assumptions to guarantee the existence of solutions but looks at approximate solutions which always exist and uses the generic approach to show the generic existence of solutions for various classes of minimization problems. The book starts with a discussion of penalty methods in constrained optimization, in particular exact penalty. The stability of the exact penalty is studied and it is shown that exact penalty is stable under certain perturbations which is important from the computational point of view.
