Motivated by the oscillations of suspension bridge decks, the authors consider the problem in the title for a simple model of a bridge structure. Specifically, they consider the forced oscillation of a particle being supported by both a linear and a nonlinear spring. The nonlinear spring is a ``one-way'' device. The resulting governing equation is an ordinary differential equation whose solutions vary widely depending upon the values of constant parameters. A result of interest is that high-frequency oscillation can occur due to a low-frequency forcing function. The paper is very well written in a readable style, and it provides new insight for a number of previously unresolved issues. The paper also exhibits a modeling and analysis procedure which could be of use in studying other nonlinear structural dynamics problems.
